Several folks asked for my recipe for the rice salad I brought to the picnic. I said I would see if it could be put on the web site. If so, how would you want me to do it? — e-mail to you or?

Rice Salad
1 cup uncooked white or brown long grain rice
6 Tbsp. olive oil
3 Tbsp. cider vinegar
1 tsp. dried tarragon, crushed
1 tsp. salt
Pepper to taste
1/2 green or red pepper, finely chopped
1/2 white onion, finely chopped
1 cucumber, seeded and finely chopped
1/2 cup chopped parsley
1 cup frozen peas (do not cook)
Sliced green and black olives
Tomatos for decoration
Cook rice according to directions. When cooked and still hot, add oil, vinegar and tarragon. Let sit to allow rice to absorb dressing. (Can be made this far a day or two ahead, then finished on serving day.)
When rice mixture is cool, add vegetables. Toss and enjoy.
Any cooked meat can be added. I like to add steamed shrimp.
I plan on visiting your school on 1/25/11 for the open house but I’m a little confused. Is the PS class a montessori class? Do I go to the 420 12th St SE building or to the Logan Building? Is Watkins the only school in the cluster schools to provide PS?

Hi Cynthia.
Good question! The Open House on 1/25 is for all Capitol Hill Cluster School (CHCS) programs. Currently, there are two Preschool (3 year old) programs within the CHCS:
1. The Montessori program currently at Watkins (420 12th St. SE) enrolls children at age 3 (Preschool). This program is moving to the Logan building effective August 2011, but since the program currently exists at Watkins, the Open House for the Montessori program will be held at Watkins. There is also a Traditional program at Watkins (which will stay at Watkins) that enrolls children at 1st grade.
2. The early childhood program at Peabody (425 C St. NE) also enrolls children at age 3. Children from Peabody and SWS (the Reggio Emilia program also in Peabody, that enrolls at age 4) feed into the Watkins traditional program.
