Summer is ending and we are about to start another great academic year at Capitol Hill Montessori.

School officially starts on Monday, August 20, 2018 for our Pre-Kindergarten 4 year-olds through 8th graders. Our new Pre-K 3 students have an introduction morning on Thursday, August 23, 2018 and then will start full-time based on their teacher’s planned schedule. Please see our school calendar for more important CHM@L and DCPS dates.

To welcome everyone back, as well as meet our new principal, Kim Adutwum, the school is hosting a Back to School Orientation on Saturday, August 18, 2018 from 10am-1:30pm. The event includes lunch/playtime for kids and families.

Key Dates for All Families
  • Saturday, August 18 Parent Orientation 10:00am – 1:30pm (includes “orientation” meeting with the new principal, and lunch/playtime for kids and families after)
  • Thursday, August 23 New Primary Parent Orientation 6:00 – 7:30pm
  • Wednesday, September 12 Back to School Night 6:00 – 8:00pm
Important School Policies
A few important school policies to keep in mind as you go back to school shopping, and plan your pick up/drop off routines for the year:
  • Dress Code: CHML does not have a mandatory uniform policy, however there are still a few requirements related to dress:
    • Open toed shoes are not allowed
    • Light Up shoes are not allowed
    • No character apparel is permitted (including backpacks, lunch boxes, water bottles, and nap bedding).
  • Electronic devices: Electronic devices should not be brought to school. If students need a cellular phone for safe travel to and from school, it must be checked in with their teacher.
  • Drop Off/Pick UpSchool starts at 8:45. Students can be dropped off for free breakfast in the cafeteria starting at 8:15. If possible, please consider walking/biking/public transit to get to school. The parking lot can fill up quickly during drop off and pick up times. The portion of G Street from 3rd Street to the front walkway of the school is a no parking/standing only zone that can be used for drop off. Do NOT park in this area to walk your child(ren) into the school. You may be ticketed.
Springboard Info and Registration
All families interested in utilizing Springboard–even for drop in days once in a while–must register in advance. Attached is a copy of the 2018-2019 registration flier. Programming will run similar to last year, with a slight change to the morning program schedule to help support the CHML AM routine.
Morning schedule will be as follows:
  • 7:30-8:00am Outdoor Physical Lab or Indoor Challenge Lab
  • 8:00-8:20am Breakfast served
  • 8:20-8:45am Transition to Multipurpose Room for school day/Team building Lab
A couple of registration reminders for families:
  • Registration is currently open and available at www.springboardkids.com or by calling 1.800.341.3177
  • Registration for electives will begin the last week of August. The elective schedule will be published the week that school starts (20 August)
  • All families should register 48 hours in advance of the day they wish their student to begin programming. This allows time for the applications to be reviewed and processed.
  • Incoming families on a phase in schedule should select THEIR first day of school as their program start date.
  • All students must be registered in order to attend programming.
Financial Assistance for Springboard
The PTSO provides financial assistance for Springboard aftercare for families that meet certain income requirements. Springboard processes these applications, and they are confidential. See instructions below and required documentation is attached. Note, applications should be sent directly to Springboard–not the PTSO.
